Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontics — treatment of malocclusion

Crooked overlapping teeth and malocclusion are not only a problem of aesthetics as it can interfere with chewing, exacerbate brushing and cause the development of caries or periodontal diseases as well as temporomandibular joint disorders. Orthodontic treatment has no age limit.

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry aimed at the treatment of patients with crooked teeth and/or malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment also involves the guidance of facial and jaw development (dentofacial orthopaedics).

During the orthodontic treatment, depending on the existing situation and the age of a patient, various devices can be used: plates, functional appliances, external distraction devices, lip buffers, rapid expanders, braces and/or their combinations.

Orthodontics for children and teenagers is not only aimed at straightening crooked teeth and improving their function as well as the entire mastication system but also protecting teeth from caries, periodontal diseases and premature loss of teeth. All these efforts were particularly important for maintaining healthy teeth.

During the period of intense growth and development of jaws, malocclusion can be corrected with removable orthodontic devices: plates, trainers, lip bumpers, etc. If removable devices are no longer effective, malocclusion can be corrected using a system of brackets. Treatment with brackets is best started only once all permanent teeth have erupted.

The orthodontic treatment is a major step towards a beautiful and well-formed smile. Often, it becomes a part of the entire treatment plan in the restoration of deformed dental arches before implantation or aesthetic and functional prosthetic treatment. Braces are the most efficient method to achieve the wanted long-lasting result.

External (metal, ceramic or no-ligature braces) and internal (tailor-made depending on the state of the patient’s teeth and jaws) braces can be used. The duration of treatment can range from six months to two years but ensures a life-long healthy and dazzling smile.

An individual treatment plan is designed for each patient and with the help of a team of different specialists. This approach ensures the best outcome of the treatment process.

Personal dental care and professional oral hygiene play a major role in the orthodontic treatment.
